A trusted interoperability advisor and expert in the healthcare standards community, Brian founded the healthcare IT consulting firm, BookZurman (BZ) in 1996. Certified as a Center for Veteran Enterprises business, and service-disabled veteran-owned small business, the company bridges the gap between healthcare and technology through the interpretation, implementation and transformation of healthcare IT standards for a better patient experience. Brian served in the U.S. Army during the Gulf War, and veteran healthcare has always been important to him. He applies his experience as a veteran and HIT subject matter expert to BookZurman’s award-winning work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Recent VA contracts focus on PMO support, clinical terminology, modeling, clinical business analysis, requirements management, enterprise architecture, interagency collaboration, revenue cycle and finance support, and Standards Development Organization (SDO) liaison efforts. Team BZ played a key role in establishing the VHA Health Information Model (VHIM) and Federal Health Information Model (FHIM) projects and is actively engaged in various interagency initiatives including the Federal Health Architecture (FHA) and the ONC Standards and Interoperability Framework. Brian is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and Team BZ strictly adheres to these successful processes, as well as Project Management Institute (PMI) and Agile HIT Standards Development. Brian holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Madison University, and applies his experience in creating efficient manufacturing processes to the healthcare space. Additionally, he studied project management at Southern Methodist University's School of Engineering and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Scrum Master (CSM).
